FAQs
Why are Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Greece bidding to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup™ together?
Our tri-continental bid will kick off a new, more global era for the FIFA World Cup™. Bringing the competition to fans in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Greece—countries that have not hosted a World Cup—will expand access to the games and harness untapped markets. All three bid partners share the same vision: to deliver an exceptional experience for players and fans, through world-class stadia and immersive game experiences, both at home and in the stands.
Connected by historic and modern partnerships, and united by a love of football, the tri-hosts are a natural fit to work together to build upon FIFA’s legacy and bring the FIFA World Cup™ into the next century.
What history do the three countries have in international football?
The three nations all have a rich history of competing in the FIFA World Cup™, with Saudi Arabia having qualified five times since debuting at the 1994 tournament (FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ will be the country’s sixth appearance), and Egypt and Greece both competing three times.
All three nations have enjoyed considerable success in association and global football tournaments. Saudi Arabia are three-time AFC Asian Cup winners (1984, 1988 and 1996), having reached the finals a joint-record six times. They are also the first AFC nation to have reached the final of a senior FIFA competition, the Confederations Cup (1992), and only the second Arab team in history to reach the Round of 16 in a FIFA World Cup™ (1994).
Egypt are the most successful country in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history having won the title seven times – most recently in 2010. They have also been runners-up 3 times and are the only country to win the competition three times in a row (2006, 2008, and 2010).
Greece recorded one of its most memorable moments in football history by beating hosts Portugal in the Euro 2004 final to win the tournament. The country has participated in four other UEFA European Football Championships (1960, 1980, 2008, 2012), reaching the quarter finals in 2012. The country’s finest performance at a FIFA World Cup™ came in 2014 when they reached the Round of 16.
What new fan experiences would a successful tri-continental bid deliver?
The first tri-continental tournament would bring together the culture, heritage, and hospitality of three vibrant countries to produce an exciting experience for players and fans. With ambitious plans for hosting the games, including world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge technology and innovative match experiences, fans will have the chance to feel the buzz of the stands and the thrill of every goal like never before.
Will new stadiums be built?
There will be strong investment commitments to ensure long-lasting infrastructure. New stadia will be built, but there will also be a focus on improving existing stadia to deliver the best fan experience and legacy.
Have Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Greece hosted major sports events before?
All three partner nations have a strong track record in hosting major sports events, including Formula 1 and Formula E in Saudi Arabia, the five-time hosting of AFCON in Egypt, and the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Greece.
